Policies

Withdrawal policy

If you are currently enrolled in CHEM 1410 and 1411 (and do not have credit for CHEM 1410) and plan to withdraw (or already have dropped or withdrawn) from CHEM 1410, then you must drop the lab (CHEM 1411) as well. Please also be aware that without credit for CHEM 1410, you will not be able to enroll in CHEM 1420. The same applies for the labs - you cannot take CHEM 1421 if you don't have credit for CHEM 1411. (The above policy also applies to CHEM 1810/1811, CHEM 1420/1421, CHEM 1820/1821, CHEM 2410/2311/2411, CHEM 2810/2811, CHEM 2420/2321/2421.)

CHEM 1410, 1411, 1420, 1421, 2410, 2420, 2311, and 2321 are all offered at UVA over the summer. In addition, you can check with your Association Dean, academic advisor, or Cindy Knight in the Chemistry Department about taking them elsewhere and having the credits transferred.

Please consult the syllabus for all courses you are enrolled in for additional policies that the instructor may have.

Minimum grades are still required despite the special grading policies outlined below and issued by the Provost's Office for Fall 2022.

At the discretion of the Provost's Office, students have the option to receive grades of Credit, General Credit, or No Credit. A grade of Credit is earned when the student's grade is between A+ and C (including C+). General Credit is earned when a student earns a grade of C- and D-. A grade of No Credit is earned when a student fails the course. Keep in mind that these policies are applied to the policies above.

Miscellaneous policies

CHEM 1500 is restricted to students who have not taken CHEM 1410 and 1420. Taking CHEM 1500 after CHEM 1420 will not impact your GPA.

BME 2104 cannot be used to satisfy CHEM 4410.

Alternatives to CHEM 3721 include CHEM 3121 and 4431. Three credits of research also remains an option.

CHEM 4410 is considered equivalent to CHEM 4440 and vice versa. Whichever one is taken first affects your GPA. The second course is reflected on your transcript but does not affect your GPA.

For students who place into MATH 1220/1320, you must earn a B or higher for MATH 1210/1310 to be wiaved. If you do not earn a B or higher in MATH 1220/1320, you will need to take MATH 1210/1310 or Linear Algebra.
