Research Associate in Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications for Postdoctoral Research Associate in Organic Chemistry under the direction of Prof. Eva Maria Alvarez Pari (https://chemistry.as.virginia.edu/people/profile/pari).

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: 

A PhD in chemistry (organic, inorganic or organometallic) is a mandatory requirement by the appointment start date.

Desirable qualifications include expertise in synthetic photochemistry, spectroscopic tools (e.g. NMR, IR, UV-Vis) as well as experience in the synthesis of sensitive organometallic compounds using Schlenk techniques. The candidate must have a strong theoretical background, experience working in organic synthesis, main group chemistry and knowledge of computational chemistry (DFT). A record of high-quality research as demonstrated by scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals will be highly valued. The successful candidate (s) will be expected to be creative, capable of working independently, be a team player and help mentor undergraduates and graduate students in the laboratory.

Undergraduate Lab Specialist

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia seeks a Laboratory Specialist Senior or Intermediate (not both) to provide support for undergraduate laboratory courses. The primary responsibility will be supporting upper-level undergraduate labs in biochemistry, analytical chemistry, and physical chemistry. This position will be joining a team of three other lab coordinators who will work together to cover all instruction labs as needed which include introductory general chemistry, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry labs.  For more information, please visit: https://chemistry.as.virginia.edu/

JOB DUTIES:

  • Prepare chemistry instructional labs per course materials

  • Prepare chemical solutions, including buffer solutions, acid/base solutions, and organic solutions

  • Maintenance of laboratory equipment including analytical instrumentation (GC/MS, LC/MS, FTIR, NMR, Microwave, Plate Readers, UV Vis, Glovebox), balances, pH meters, ovens and centrifuges.
  • Management of glassware and consumable lab supplies, including beakers, flasks, and other typical glassware.
  • Prepare specialized equipment, apparatus and solutions for specific laboratory sessions
  • Cleanup activities following laboratory sessions
  • Management and disposal of waste (including hazardous) materials following laboratory sessions
  • Stockroom duties to include glassware washing, chemical inventory control, general cleaning, waste management, and other duties as assigned.
  • Provide general oversight during laboratory sessions
  • Monitor student compliance with good safety practices, including proper clothing (long sleeves, long pants, no exposed skin except for hands and face), lab coats, and goggles
  • Maintain laboratory computers and projection equipment
  • Monitor for laboratory accidents and illnesses, including directing students to University Department of Student Health or other medical facilities as needed
  • Provide feedback to the instructional Faculty in formulating instructional procedures, suggesting options for improving student success, and recommending solutions.
  • Oversee day-to-day operation of instructional labs. Schedule and maintain maintenance records of equipment/facilities. May assemble, test, calibrate, clean, or make minor repairs to equipment.
  • Train users in equipment operation; explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, limitations, and outcomes.
  • May oversee undergraduate instructional assistants and graduate teaching assistants during lab sessions.
  •  Attend weekly meetings of teaching assistants and/or other lab coordinators
  • Crosstrain in the preparation and operation of the introductory general chemistry and organic chemistry labs
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

LAB SPECIALIST INTERMEDIATE

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 4 years of experience. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 8 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Preferred Experience:

  • Successful completion of a two-semester university-level course in introductory chemistry
  • Knowledge of computational chemistry is a plus
  • Familiarity of a variety of instrumentation software packages is a plus
  • Ability to use Microsoft Windows software is a must.

LAB SPECIALIST SENIOR

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 6 years of experience. 10 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree or Master's degree plus 4 years lab-related experience.

Preferred experience:

  • Knowledge of computational chemistry is a plus
  • Familiarity of a variety of instrumentation software packages is a plus
  • Ability to use Microsoft Windows software is a must.
  • Successful completion of a two-semester university-level course in organic chemistry.
