OPPORTUNITIES AT UVA
Here is a list of funding opportunities for undergraduate research in the College.
Office of Citizen Scholar Development offers two scholarships that students doing research in Chemistry and related fields often apply to. See their grants webpage for the most up-to-date information. You will be most competitive for these awards if you have already joined a research lab before that year’s application deadline.
- Double Hoo Award -- The Double Hoo supports pairs of undergraduate and graduate students pursuing research together each summer.
- Harrison Undergraduate Research Award -- The Harrison funds outstanding undergraduate research projects to be carried out in the summer following application.
Additional funding opportunities are listed below.
- The Minerva Award: $1800 (subject to change) to fund scholarly projects conducted by College students in the summer. Application due March 31st.
- Raven Society Fellowship: $2500 of summer funding for creative projects. Prioritizing interdisciplinary work.
- The Semesters Scholars Award: Funding of up to $1500 to fund scholarly projects during the semester.
- Small Research and Travel Grants: Grants capped at $1500 awarded on a seasonal basis to fund travel to present at a conference or to fund research/artistic activities. Deadlines are November 15th and March 15th.
- Murphy Fund for International Study: Students traveling abroad to conduct research or present at conferences. GPA requirement of 3.4. For 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students.
OPPORTUNITIES BEYOND UVA
Many science-related fellowships are available from various government agencies and other institutions. To find opportunities, look in the Awards Database, which includes opportunities for undergraduate research as well as other activities.
A few specific awards that students pursuing undergraduate research in chemistry may consider are the following:
- NSF REU – funded summer research at many possible university sites across the U.S.
- NIST SURF – funded summer internship in a laboratory at the National Institute of Standards (NIST) in Maryland, Colorado, or Hawaii
- DAAD RISE – funded summer internships in Germany
- ThinkSwiss – scholarship for 2-3 month internship in Switzerland
- Barry Goldwater Scholarship – prestigious scholarship for college students in STEM fields
- Astronaut Scholarship – prestigious scholarship for rising 3rd and 4th years interesting in a research career in STEM.
